The Doctor of Education is commonly aimed at school leaders, trainers, and education managers. Online EdD pathways differ in residency, research methods training, and the weight of the final project. Some emphasise professional portfolios. Others require a thesis and defence. Applicants should not assume that every EdD is interchangeable with a PhD in education.
Career use depends on the receiving employer or ministry. A professional doctorate may support promotion inside a training organisation and still fall short of a public-university academic appointment in another country. That is a recognition question, not a courtesy the awarding body can settle by letter.
Assessment design should include item standards, versioning, integrity rules, and a proportionate identity check. Supervision should be documented: who may supervise, how many candidates each person holds, and how progress is reviewed. Those records are the core of research-degree quality.
Institutions should publish completion requirements in the same place as the marketing timeline. If the defence is online, the rules for the panel and the recording of the outcome belong in the study regulations.
