Professor Abbas Ay Taher is a globally respected academic, clinician, and healthcare strategist with over four decades of distinguished service in Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery. Renowned for his surgical precision and educational leadership, he has performed more than 20,000 complex procedures and mentored postgraduate students across Iraq, the United Kingdom, Iran, and the United States. His career reflects a rare blend of clinical excellence, academic rigor, and visionary management in healthcare systems.
Professor Taher’s academic journey is marked by an extraordinary array of qualifications and fellowships from leading institutions worldwide. He holds degrees and certifications in dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, pain management, healthcare leadership, and business administration. His affiliations include the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Chartered Management Institute (UK), among many others.
Currently serving as Professor and Acting Dean at the College of Dentistry, IU Najaf, Iraq, Professor Taher continues to shape the future of dental education and surgical innovation. He also holds a Visiting Professorship at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, where he contributes to advanced research and curriculum development. His previous roles include Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Kufa and Consultant Surgeon at Peace Dental Centre in London.
A prolific researcher and author, Professor Taher has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to internationally recognized medical textbooks. His editorial leadership includes serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Contemporary Medical Sciences and as a board member of several academic journals in dentistry and oral health.
His clinical expertise spans craniofacial trauma, cleft lip and palate repair, TMJ disorders, orthognathic surgery, and pain management. He is also a certified expert in traumatic stress and has led initiatives in crisis healthcare leadership. Fluent in Arabic, English, and Persian, Professor Taher is a skilled communicator and collaborator across cultures and disciplines.
Professor Taher’s accolades include the Golden Medal from the International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics and multiple honors from the American Biographic Institute. His lifelong commitment to excellence, ethics, and global education continues to inspire peers and students alike.
