Wesley James Sterling is a highly experienced healthcare professional and educator with more than forty years of distinguished service in clinical practice and health professions education. A Registered Nurse and Clinical Practice Educator with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK), he has built an outstanding career spanning acute and critical care, major trauma, and specialist nursing education. His early professional life was shaped by his work at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he cared for patients with severe injuries during a prolonged period of civil unrest in Northern Ireland. This experience provided him with exceptional clinical expertise in trauma care, emergency nursing, and critical care management.
Throughout his career, Wesley Sterling has made significant contributions to the education and training of healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines. He served for many years as a Lecturer and Course Director at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast, where he played a key role in developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes. He has extensive experience teaching clinical examination skills, acute and critical care, and specialist nursing practice modules. In addition to his work in nursing education, he has taught clinical skills to medical students at Queen’s University Belfast and has been actively involved in the training of pharmacists through the Independent Prescribing Programme.
Wesley Sterling continues to contribute to healthcare education as a Teaching Associate in the School of Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, where he supports the clinical skills training of undergraduate medical students. He also maintains an active role as Education Director of WJS Healthcare Education, Training and Therapy, through which he provides independent education and training in areas such as Basic Life Support, Anaphylaxis, and First Aid. His commitment to clinical practice remains strong, as he continues to work in a private capacity specialising in sports injury and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
In recognition of his extensive clinical experience, dedication to teaching excellence, and significant contributions to the development of healthcare professionals, Wesley James Sterling has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Health Sciences in Clinical Education and Practice by the American University of Business and Social Sciences (AUBSS) in collaboration with the International Association for Quality Assurance in Pre-Tertiary & Higher Education (QAHE). This honour acknowledges his lifelong commitment to advancing clinical education and improving standards of healthcare practice.
Wesley Sterling is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and has received several teaching awards from Queen’s University Belfast in recognition of his excellence and innovation in education. He remains actively engaged in teaching, mentorship, and professional development, continuing to share his vast knowledge and experience with the next generation of healthcare practitioners.
